Heirloom Tomato Plant Sharing in Chicago

Beginning in 2010, we began to facilitate pop-up Plants for Poems events in city neighborhoods. Each year we plant about 5,000 heirloom tomato seeds into starter pots, set-up pop-up trading posts in various city neighborhoods, and invite the public to trade notes, poems or recipes for tomato seedlings.Through the “Plants for Poems” project, thousands of heirloom tomato seedlings find their ways into urban gardens, thousands of plants become poems, recipes and other random acts of generosity, and discrete trades have turned into long-term relationships as first-time traders search and find our heirloom tomato seedlings year after year.
